Hacking the Human:
Social Engineering.

The most sophisticated firewall is useless if an employee hands over their password. Social engineering exploits human psychology rather than technical flaws.

Psychological Manipulation: The Core of Social Engineering

Social Engineering is the art of manipulating people so they give up confidential information. Attackers exploit universal human traits: Authority, Urgency, Fear, and Greed.

By masquerading as a trusted entity—like a bank, a coworker, or a government official—attackers can trick even the most cautious individuals into clicking malicious links or revealing sensitive data.

Common Attack Vectors

Social engineering takes many forms, each designed to catch victims off guard:

  • Phishing: Fraudulent emails designed to steal credentials or deliver malware.
  • Spear Phishing: Highly targeted attacks aimed at specific individuals or organizations.
  • Vishing (Voice Phishing): Using phone calls to manipulate victims into revealing information.
  • Baiting: Leaving infected USB drives in public places, hoping a curious employee will plug it in.
  • Pretexting: Creating a fabricated scenario to obtain information (e.g., "I'm from IT, and I need your password to fix your account").

Building a Culture of Skepticism

Technical controls can only go so far. The best defense against social engineering is Security Awareness Training. Employees must be taught to verify the identity of anyone requesting sensitive information and to be wary of unexpected requests, even if they appear to come from a trusted source.
