Week 2 - Day 5 Photography & Editing

Portraiture Basics.

A portrait is not just a picture of someone; it's a connection between the photographer and the subject. Mastering portraiture requires technical skill, but more importantly, it requires empathy and direction.

Posing & Direction

Most people feel uncomfortable in front of a camera. Your job as the photographer is to provide clear, confident direction to help your subject look and feel their best.

  • The "Squinch": A subtle narrowing of the eyes that adds confidence and intensity to a portrait. It's a classic professional technique.
  • Posture & Angles: Learn how small changes in body position—leaning forward, turning the shoulders, or shifting weight—can drastically change the appearance of your subject.
  • Communication: Keep talking! Silence is the enemy of a good portrait. Use positive reinforcement and clear instructions to build trust and rapport.

Connecting with Your Subject

The best portraits happen when the subject forgets they are being photographed. We explore techniques to capture genuine emotion and candid moments.

Eye Contact

The eyes are the windows to the soul. Mastering the "catchlight" and knowing when to have your subject look into or away from the lens is critical for emotional impact.

Environmental Portraits

Sometimes the best way to tell a person's story is to photograph them in their natural environment. Learn to use surroundings to add context and narrative to your portraits.

Pro Tip: Focus on the Eyes

In portraiture, the eyes must be tack-sharp. Even if the rest of the face is slightly out of focus, as long as the eyes are sharp, the portrait will work. Use single-point autofocus and place it directly on the eye closest to the camera.
